My sustained investigation was based around the questions: Are we as girls consumed by false conceptions of beauty? And How do external forces influence girls’ perceptions of beauty?
I explored these questions throughout the year by digitally photographing various females with elements representing what may alter their self perceptions: other’s words, social media, magazines, plastic surgery, etc. I asked individuals what they felt pressured by in terms of beauty and incorporated these ideas alongside my own. I worked to incorporate elements of color and makeup to fully represent these factors. Each piece was formatted with a blank and distressed expression to show the distress that’s put on girls by society’s standards. I concluded the investigation with self portraiture, partially due to how I’m quarantined, but also because I was able to show my own self perceptions both with (second to last row of images with plastic) and without influence from others and the media (final row of images).
